Connecticut is making positive steps to encourage the growth of solar and other renewable energy sources in the state. Rebates, grants and other incentives are available along with the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) Solar PV Rebate Program provides superior rebates on residential solar installations up to 10kW in size. The current rebate is $1.75 per Watt for the first 5kW and $1.25 per Watt for the next 5kW. The rebate has stipulations. Firstly the inverter that transforms the DC collected by the solar array into useable AC has to have an efficiency of 94% or better. Secondly, there should be no shading on the site of the solar panels. And thirdly, the PV panels should be south-facing and tilted at a 35-degree angle. All of these stipulations are good practice when installing solar panels, and a professional installer will see that these rules are followed and that your solar panels are in the ideal condition for gathering solar energy.

The CCEF provides a list of eligible installers who will visit your home or business, inform you of the different types of solar arrays available and will process all the solar rebate paperwork for you.

You must use a CCEF eligible installer to qualify for the rebate program and we will be happy to recommend an eligible solar installer in your area.

Another program that is unique to the state of Connecticut is the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) program. RECs are tradable commodities that you earn from producing clean energy. There are companies that will be willing to pay you money for the RECs that you earn via your solar panel system. RECs can actually earn you hundreds of dollars a year. The CCEF or a local Connecticut solar installer will be able to provide you with more information.

There are three main types of solar installation and these are off-grid, grid-tied with batteries and grid-tied without batteries. It is important to discuss with a local solar installer which type of system will be right for you.

The advantage of a grid-tied with batteries system is that you are still entitled to all the state benefits that work in conjunction with your utility provider, and also you are protected from a black-out or power-cut because you have some excess energy stored on-site at your property.

Another great advantage of the grid-tied system is that your home will still be generating electricity even when nobody is home. So if the family vacations for 3 weeks, the utility company will actually be paying you for your holiday.

We will be happy to recommend a certified solar installer in your area who can offer free advice and estimates on what type of system is right for your home or business.

An investment in photovoltaic (PV) technology is an investment for your future. Utility prices will continue to increase and as they do, so will the value of the electricity you gather through your solar array. PV systems do not depreciate in value over time and adding a solar array to your property will increase that value of your home, and should it come time to sell your property, you will be able to recoup the complete investment from installing solar and pass on the gift of free, renewable energy.
